This one left a return address
Every earlier wave lost each other because there was no instrument. The one that left after 2019 has one, and mostly does not use it.
Between 2018 and 2021, one hundred and ninety five thousand four hundred and thirty three Lebanese emigrated. Seventy seven thousand seven hundred and seventy seven of them left in 2021 alone, roughly forty per cent of the four year total inside a single year.
In 2021 the president of the Lebanese Order of Physicians warned that more than two and a half thousand doctors had gone. Most of them were aged between thirty five and fifty five.
Read that age band again, because it is the whole story. Those are not graduates leaving for training. That is the middle of a career. The years a doctor is most useful to the country that trained them, and the years it is hardest to start again anywhere else. People do not move at forty five for opportunity. They move at forty five because staying stopped being possible.
In 2004, long before any of it, roughly forty per cent of Lebanese medical school graduates were practising in the United States. The pipe has been running for decades. What changed after 2019 is the pressure, not the direction.
That is worth saying plainly, because the temptation is to treat this wave as unprecedented. It is not. It is the same departure, faster.
The wave that left in the 1880s was written into ship manifests under the wrong empire and had its names shortened at the counter. Within a generation the connection to a village in Mount Lebanon existed only as a story a grandmother told, and when she stopped telling it, it stopped.
The wave that left during the war years had letters and phone cards. It lost each other more slowly, and it still lost each other.
This one left with a professional record that is public, permanent and searchable. A profile carrying a current employer, a city, a field and a name. The entire apparatus that took a century to lose people has been made obsolete by an ordinary website, and almost nobody notices, because having a LinkedIn does not feel like an achievement.
Every previous wave lost each other because there was no instrument. This is the first one that would have to choose to.
That is the real difference between this generation and every one before it. Not talent, not money, not timing. Being findable is now free, and being lost now takes effort.
Two and a half thousand doctors are practising somewhere tonight. Not one of them is unreachable. That has never been true before in the history of this country’s leaving.
So the ask has not changed, and it is still the smallest one on this record. Say where you are from, on the profile you already have. Be findable.
