The names were sanded down at the border

Dabaghi became DeBakey, and the erasure did not stop in 1920.

One of the reasons nobody realises how many of these people there are is that the names did not survive the crossing.

Michael DeBakey, one of the defining cardiovascular surgeons of the twentieth century, was born to Lebanese immigrants and the family name was Dabaghi before America shortened it.

That happened tens of thousands of times, at Ellis Island and everywhere like it. A clerk who could not spell a name wrote down something close enough, and the family kept it because arguing with a clerk was not a thing you did in that queue.

The result is a century of Lebanese achievement filed under names that no longer look Lebanese. It is why the answer to name a famous Lebanese person is usually short, and why it is wrong.

There is a second version of the same erasure that is still running. A Lebanese researcher publishing from a laboratory in Houston is recorded as an American scientist. A Lebanese engineer at a Swiss firm is a Swiss engineer. Each individual record is accurate. The aggregate is a lie by omission, and nobody is maintaining the correction.

That is what this record is for. Not pride. Correction.
