They were registered as Turks

How the founding paperwork of the largest Lebanese communities filed them under the wrong empire.

For decades, Lebanese arrivals in Latin America were officially recorded as Turks.

Not out of malice. They travelled on Ottoman documents, so the clerk at the port wrote down what the passport said. The word stuck. In parts of Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, turco remained the everyday term for someone of Lebanese or Syrian descent long after the Ottoman Empire had stopped existing.

So the founding administrative record of one of the largest Lebanese communities on earth files them under the name of the empire they were leaving.

Set that beside what happened further north, where immigration clerks shortened names they could not spell and Dabaghi became DeBakey, and you get a century of Lebanese presence recorded under the wrong nationality and the wrong names.

This is the practical reason the question name a famous Lebanese person produces such a short list. It is not that there were few of them. It is that the paperwork was against them from the first morning, and nobody has ever gone back through it.

That is what this record is for. Not sentiment. Bookkeeping that should have been done a hundred years ago.
