Nothing compounds

Why the wealthiest diaspora on earth has built almost nothing that outlives it.

We are the wealthiest diaspora with the shortest memory.

There are Lebanese families holding serious capital in West Africa, the Gulf, Brazil and France. There are Lebanese people at the top of shipping, banking, telecoms, medicine and couture. By any measure that counts, this diaspora succeeded.

And it has built almost nothing that outlives the people who built it.

Look at what other diasporas left behind. Endowed university chairs. Research institutes. Professional bodies still running a century later. Funds that make grants against a published standard rather than through a phone call. Archives with somebody paid to maintain them.

Ours is personal, generous, and finished when the person is.

This is not a flaw in our character. It is closer to arithmetic.

Other diasporas concentrated. They arrived somewhere in numbers, stayed, and built where they landed. Density in one place is what an institution needs in order to exist.

We did the opposite, and we were rewarded for it. We went everywhere, in small numbers, and kept going. A few thousand in one country, a few hundred in the next, across dozens of them. That dispersal is exactly why Lebanese commerce reached so far, and it is exactly why nothing ever consolidated. Nowhere did we reach the density that funds a chair or sustains an archive.

So the cost is precise: nothing compounds.

Every generation arrives somewhere new and starts its contacts from zero. A Lebanese engineer landing in Dubai next month cannot reach the one who landed fifteen years ago and already knows which firms pay. The knowledge exists. It never gets handed down. We rebuild the same network, badly, every twenty five years.

Which points at the only fix that fits the problem. If we are thin everywhere, the thing that reaches critical mass cannot be tied to any one country. It has to span the dispersal instead of fighting it.

This is not a complaint about the successful. It is a request to them, and a specific one.

We are asking for something rarer than money. Be findable. Let your name sit on a record that says what you built, so the next one does not have to discover you by accident. Take one call a year from somebody thirty years behind you. Name the people you know who belong on that record and are missing from it, which is most of them.

That is the entire ask. It costs an hour a year and it is the only thing that has ever turned a scattered people into a network with a memory.
