Forty three patents, and almost nobody knows his name
Hassan Kamel Al-Sabbah left Nabatieh for a General Electric laboratory in 1923. He was dead at forty, and the record very nearly lost him.
He was born in Nabatieh, in the south of Lebanon, on the sixteenth of August 1894.
In 1916 the Ottoman army conscripted him and made him a telegraph operator. That detail is worth holding onto, because it is the first time anybody put electricity in his hands, and it was done to him rather than chosen by him.
He got out. He taught mathematics, in Damascus and at the American University of Beirut, and in 1921 he sailed for the United States.
A short spell at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Then Illinois in 1923. And in that same year he joined the vacuum tube department of the General Electric engineering laboratory at Schenectady, New York, which at the time was close to the most advanced industrial research operation on earth.
That is how long he had.
In them he filed forty three patents. The work was mathematical and experimental, principally on rectifiers and inverters.
Those two words do no favours to the story, so it is worth saying what they are. A rectifier turns alternating current into direct current. An inverter does the reverse. Between them they are the reason electricity generated in one form can be used in another, which is the unglamorous machinery underneath almost everything electrical that has been built since. He also worked on the transmission of pictures, which is to say television, at a moment when very few people had seen one.
He was not decorating the edges of the field. He was inside the part that had to work.
THE THIRTY FIRST OF MARCH 1935
He was driving near Elizabethtown, in upstate New York, when he was killed in an automobile accident.
He was forty years old. He is buried in Nabatieh.
Search his name and you will find him called the Arab Edison, and credited as the father of the solar cell, and given a patent count closer to seventy.
We have left all three out.
The solar claim does not survive the sources we could check. The seventy figure does not reconcile with the forty three that is documented. And the Edison comparison is the kind of thing that feels generous and is actually a demotion, because it defines a man from Nabatieh by an American he never worked with.
This matters more than it looks. A record that inflates is not a record, and the first reader who checks one soft number stops believing the hard ones next to it. Forty three patents in twelve years, filed by a schoolteacher from a village in south Lebanon inside General Electric, needs no help at all.
Almost nobody knows who he is.
Not in Lebanon, not in the diaspora, and not in the industry he contributed to. There is no institute with his name on it, no chair, no prize, no annual lecture. A man produced forty three patents at the frontier of electrical engineering and the thing that survives him is a Wikipedia page and a grave.
That is the argument this record keeps running into from a different direction every time. It is not that the Lebanese abroad did not achieve. It is that almost nothing was built to hold the achievement afterwards, so each one has to be rediscovered by accident, one at a time, by whoever happens to look.
He did the hard part a hundred years ago. Remembering him was the easy part, and we did not do it.
So he goes on the record, with dates, so that it can be checked. And so that the next Lebanese engineer who walks into a room like that, and assumes they are the first, knows exactly how wrong they are.
